Rick Shema, CCM

I am a Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) with over 30 years of meteorological and forensic experience.  My company, WeatherGuy.com, LLP was founded in 1996. My specialties include forensic marine meteorology, reconstruction of weather events, ship and boating accidents, weather routing for cruisers and racing yachts, and education and training for mariners.

I have forecast experience in all major ocean basins, Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, and Northwest Passage. My main geographical area of expertise is North and South Pacific Oceans including but not limited to northern and southern hemispheres, Hawaiian waters, Alaska to Panama Canal coastal waters, and Galapagos to Australia.

Recently, I have completed a four year term on the American Meteorological Society Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists, where I am an authority on certifying consulting meteorologists.

Previous to my professional career, I served in the U.S. Navy for over 24 years, which began as a commissioned Ensign and retired as a Commander. I held a top secret special compartmented information security clearance. I spent over eight years of sea duty onboard various warships including aircraft and helicopter carriers. I studied tropical cyclones and provided heavy weather avoidance tactics to evade threatening weather. On my shore assignments, I developed optimum ship route plans, forecasts, and reconstructed heavy weather events, including avoiding tropical cyclones, for Department of Defense assets in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

I love teaching meteorology classes to adult mariners. My company motto: Predict, Provide, Protect describes out commitment to safety at sea. I was a temporary, private high school teacher in physics and oceanography until a permanent hire could be located. I have been a guest speaker in various occasions including undergraduate sessions to college students and safety at sea seminars.

When I’m not working, I enjoy racing and cruising my sailboat in the Hawaiian Islands. Sailing various types of boats since childhood, I grew to appreciate the value of a good weather forecast. I have raced in sailboats across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii four times. I have also enjoyed local club races.

"Rick is one of the best. In a recent race, we had three weather forecasts and Rick's was the most accurate. He is very easy to work with and, because he is a racing sailor, knows the kind of weather information racing sailor's need."

"I do not pretend to be a meteorologist on land or on the ocean.  I do know enough to know I don't know enough.  This is why I pay someone to advise me on weather.  Rick Shema has been providing me with weather information for years and has enabled me to make wise decisions about weather.  He is someone I can trust. Keep it up, you are good at what you do.  I have four years of experience with you that proves it."

"SV Apple arrived safely in Nuka Niva. Thank you, for your very detailed weather, it was 100% accurate. Yes, you were right. The waves did grow as did the wind. You we're also right that after 24 hour I noticed a slight let up & 36 hour the high winds and seas would end!! Exactly after 36 hours it did, like a switch had been suddenly turned off. Thank you so much for your detailed reports & words of encouragement."

"Rick Shema provided us with outstanding expert witness services in a high value case. His thorough research and concise explanation of complex weather processes were well thought out and easy for a lay person to understand. We successfully settled our case with results that were better than anticipated, much because of Mr Shema's knowledge and professionalism."

“We just completed our operation. The forecasting was spot on and really helped us during that last blow. We are on contract to do a similar installation off Kauai, Barking Sands next summer. I am sure we will require your forecasting then. Thanks again!”
